For some style junkies, a fresh Instagram profile means a filthy planet.
People are throwing out their clothes more quickly than ever, a new UK survey suggests — and not because the items are worn out or even out of style.
The clothes are becoming castoffs simply because they’ve appeared too many times on wearers’ social-media accounts.
The survey of 2,000 people, conducted by polling firm Censuswide on behalf of green cleaning company Method, found that one in 10 respondents would dump their duds after wearing the items just three times in photos posted on Facebook or Instagram.
And “dump” often means exactly that: One in 5 respondents admits to stuffing unwanted clothing in the trash rather than donating or recycling it.
Global fast-fashion giants such as H&M, Zara and Forever 21 sell mountains of trendy clothes at an affordable price point. It’s made shoppers less discriminating in their purchases; the Evening Standard reports that the survey was prompted by earlier findings that Brits were buying twice as much clothing as they were a decade ago.
Environmentalists are urging consumers to discard unwanted clothing in eco-conscious ways to keep the “likes” out of landfills.
